Top Pittsburgh Concerts Happening This December

December may be cold month, but it is a time people begin to be festive in anticipation of the holiday season. It is not a bad time to have fun as the year comes to a close. There are a number of great concerts this December in Pittsburg that you could go to, here are some of them.

Ron White: Ron White is a successful American stand up comedian who has held sold out concerts around America. In 2003 he made a blue collar comedy tour which covered 90 cities and was very successful.  He made appearances in many TV shows including The Gong Show with Dave Attell. This concert will be held at the Benedum center in Pittsburg.

Shaquille O’Neal’s ALL STAR COMEDY JAM TOUR 2012: This is another event that will be happening at the Benedum Center in Pittsburg. The show will include am all star line up of comedians such as Gary Owen. Gary has been a comedian since 1997. He was once named “Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego”. He recently starred in the movie “Think Like A Man”. The other comedians present will be Tony Roberts and Michael Blackson. The concert will take place on December 1st 20:00 EST.

Jim Brickman: Is a pianist and songwriter. He does mostly piano compositions and instrumentals. He has been nominated for the Grammies in the past. He was nominated in 2003 for Song writer of the year awards. You can catch him in Pittsburg on December 28th at the Byham Theater.

Martina McBride: Martina McBride will be performing in Pittsburg this December. She has had a successful career in music since she started out in 1991. She was nominated twice; in 1995 and 1996 for the Grammy Awards.  She had previously nominated in 1993 by the Academy of Country Music Awards. She was awarded by Country Music Association Awards  for Music Video of the Year for “Independence Day”. She has been named the Celine Deon of Country Music. She will be performing on December 13, 2012at the Liberty Ave.

TobyMac: If you would like to go to a Christian Concert then you may consider going to the TobbyMac concert this December in Pittsburg. He is one of the most successful Christian rappers. He has been nominated for the Grammys 7 times to date. He has won numerous other awards including the GMA dove awards. The concert will take place at the Consol Energy Center on December the 15th.

Foxy Shazam: If you Like Rock concerts then you may consider going to Foxy Shazam’s concert this December. Foxy Shazam is an American band from Ohio. They have recorded 4 albums to date. They will be performing alongside Gene the Werewolf. The concert will be held at 400 Lincoln Avenue on December 31st.

There are many other concerts in Pittsburg that are likely going to happen in December. There are more than a dozen orchestras that will be performing and they are great for people who like classical music. There is definitely something for everyone this December in Pittsburg.

Benedum Center Pittsburgh

The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts

The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has quite a history. It was constructed in 1912, with the original name of The Stanley Theater. The original purpose for the building was to present movies. However, in 1987 it was rechristened The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts in order to present live performances.

When the structure was first erected, it cost $3 million to construct, which is a fairly expensive movie house – even by modern standards. It was operated by the Stanley Warner Theater division of Warner Bros., which meant this was the place in Pittsburgh to see new Warner Brothers films at the time. It can be found at 719 Liberty Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, which is bordered by the Allegheny River on the north. This Cultural District is home to six different theaters, including Allegheny Riverfront Park and Heinz Hall. This Cultural District resulted from H.J. Heinz II’s vision. He’s the ‘Heinz’ behind the H.J. Heinz Company that’s given the world catsup, among many other products.

This building went through a major transformation when The Stanley was bought by the Cinemette Corporation, which majorly made it over. It was purchased once again in 1977 by DiCeasare Engler Productions, which aimed to change the venue from a movie house to a concert theater. Some of the artists that eventually performed there during a period that spanned from the ‘70s to the ‘80s include The Grateful Dead, Bob Marley and Prince. In fact, the late Marley gave his last live concert there.

The $3 million it cost to build this theater is nothing compared to the $43 million it took to restore it in the late ‘80s. Some of the improvements included an extension of the stage, as well as support facilities constructed at the theater’s back side. However, the building’s interior was largely kept the same. One of its original centerpieces is the building’s 4,700 pound chandelier. It stands 20 feet high and is a full 12 feet wide. Now that’s a big light!

In addition to the rock, soul and reggae singers that have performed at the venue over the years, the Benedum Center now presents such highbrow performances from the likes of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. It’s also home to the Pittsburgh Symphony. It was also a venue for many of those PBS doo-wop TV specials. Furthermore, Wheel of Fortune took a turn there, while a documentary film that actor Jeff Goldblum, appropriately titled Pittsburgh, features a lot of scenes there. At the time, Goldblum was starring in a Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera production for The Music Man.

For anybody visiting Pittsburgh for the first time, The Benedum Center for the Performing Arts needs to be on their itinerary because there really is so much more to this East Coast city than just steel mills. Indeed, there’s a lot of great culture there, too, and this historic hall is a place where much of the city’s high culture takes place.

The place can be avoided on hot summer days, unless there is a great concert and you don’t mind the sweaty atmosphere.
